Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs)

What is a MOOC?

A Massive Open Online Course (MOOC) is an online course that is available to anyone for free or at an affordable cost via web-based platforms like Coursera, edX, FutureLearn, and Iversity. A MOOC typically consists of a mix of self-study materials such as video lectures, podcasts, and readings as well as learner activities such as quizzes, discussions and peer-reviewed assignments.

UCPH MOOCs on Coursera

In February 2013 the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) signed an agreement with Coursera – one of the leading MOOC providers globally. Since its launch in April 2012, Coursera has experienced a rapid growth trajectory. Starting as a small initiative of a few American universities, it has evolved into a global platform, offering thousands of courses from the world's premier universities, companies, and organizations to an ever-growing number of learners worldwide.

The UCPH MOOC Unit

The Centre for Online and Blended Learning (COBL) is hosting the UCPH MOOC Unit. The unit’s task is to coordinate, drive, and evolve the production of all MOOCs offered by UCPH on Coursera.

The MOOC Unit facilitates the planning, design, and production of the courses in close collaboration with the course leaders and lecturers. The Unit has expertise in course design, production of video lectures and podcasts, as well as implementation of peer-assessed and computer-evaluated assignments, online discussions and other features offered by the Coursera platform.

Collaboration with Danish, Nordic, and European partners

The University of Copenhagen has produced a number of MOOCs in collaboration with Danish, Nordic, and European partners including Danish Red Cross, Technical University of Denmark, Copenhagen Business School, University of Iceland, and 4EU+ University Alliance.
